The awards our area receives regularly are too long to list! We have received Trip Advisor’s prestigious Top 25 Travel Destinations, USA Today Best Boardwalks for Food, Stadium Journey Magazine 101 Best Stadium Experiences in Sports, FlipKey Top East Coast Beaches, and HuffingtonPost.com Best Restaurant Cities in our very recent past, and that list continues to grow.
Of course our main driver of economy is tourism based, but we also have industry ranging from manufacturing to agriculture as well. Our area is an operations base for companies like International Paper and Canfor Forest Products, as well as foreign companies like German based Bausch-Linneman. Over the past several years we have seen a continuous decrease in unemployment which is good news in any economy. Since 2010 our building permits for residential constructions have been up over 50% in Horry County. We have seen other economic uptick indicators as well, including the recent completion of the $120 million overpass project at Market Common and Socastee Boulevard on 17 Bypass, and Highway 31 and 707 expansion projects revving back up.
